Texas A& is trying to join the Southeastern Conference and also stay in with the Big 12. The president of the school R. Bowen Loftin has offered his first rather detailed comments yesterday on the Aggies’ rather a public interest in joining the SEC which is a move which should set off a round of conference realignment duties. Loftin said “We’ve made no decision about terminating our relationship with the Big 12,” “This is all about what is best for Texas A&M, along with … visibility for us and our athletes and financial resources. That’s what it’s all about. I think anybody in my shoes would have exactly the same kinds of concerns.”
He added that currently there isn’t a timetable in place for any decision or any realignment by the Texas A&M committee and it is a length process which needs to be carried out. He has also acknowledged that Texas A&M did approach the SEC which has been the winner of the previous BCS championships in football but he then reaffirmed on Sunday that its 12 school membership will now leave the door open for the expansion. Loftin said “There is no bid,” “There has never been a bid to invite us into the SEC at any time in the past and if it were to occur in the future, we would certainly want to evaluate that.”
Loftin has met with reporters just shortly after he received authority from the board to allow for any action he deems required for the realignment. He then said that A&M is now looking only at the SEC but he did not rule out many other possibilities. Basketball scores
He said “It’s not so much what’s wrong with the Big 12, it’s what’s right for Texas A&M and where we want to go in time,”
Dan Branch had released a statement on Monday afternoon saying that “While events may continue to evolve in the coming weeks, at this time, there is no immediate need to evaluate the merits of an athletic conference reconfiguration involving Texas A&M University and, potentially, other Texas public universities,” “If the current situation changes, our committee is prepared to convene.” If these reports are any indication Texax A&M will need to be wait a long time for anything to happen.
