CELTICS OUTDO THE MAGIC

The Orlando Magic made a trip up north to take on the Boston Celtics Sunday night for one of the more anticipated games this season. However, the Magic was in somewhat of a rut coming into the game, having lost four of their last seven games. To better their odds, they planned and speculated how to control the towering bodies of Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Whatever strategy they decided on worked, but they forgot to include Rajon Rondo. With all focus on Pierce and Allen, the Rondo took advantage of an open lane and led his team to victory. The league leading Celtics took the game 91-80 after regulation time. Odds.

Boston started off a bit slow, finishing five points behind Orlando at the end of the first quarter. It wasn’t until a scare at the end of the second, when G Marquis Daniels bruised his spinal cord in a collision with Gilbert Arenas, that the Celtics really got into the game. Following Daniels exit, the home team went on to lead 46-43 at halftime, and by as many as 16 points in the last two periods of play. A lot of that had to do with Rondo, who dominated the inside and the third quarter to finish with 26 points and 7 assists. Allen also went 2 of 4 beyond the arch to move within three of the NBA record 2,560 made three-pointers, and closed the game with 11 points and 5 rebounds. When all was said and done, good defense on Allen and Pierce was not enough to keep the Celtics from 47.6% shooting and the win. Scores.

For the team that has taken and made the most three-pointers in the NBA, the Magic put up a surprisingly low 3 of 24 from beyond the arch, and 32 of 93 overall. As coach Stan Van Gundy admitted, “We didn’t have a single perimeter guy have a good game.” That is not something any team can afford to do against the Celtics.
