Outfielder Cody Ross says he has concluded to sign with the Boston Red Sox, giving them a seasoned hitter with postseason accomplishment on his resume to help replace J.D. Drew in right field. NFL lines

The Boston Red Sox get reached a deal with the free agent outfielder on a one year, $3 million deal, a baseball resource said. Ross claimed the contract will not be completed until he’s taking a physical.

Cody figures to be given every chance to jump ahead of Darnell McDonald in a possible squad in right field and will appear to camp hoping to convince new Red Sox general manager Bobby Valentine that he must play every day before Ryan Sweeney. He likewise will provide sorely-needed safety with left fielder Carl Crawford uncertain to be prepared when the regular season begins, having had wrist surgical treatment earlier this month. Ross, 31year-old, is a .261 career hitter with one hundred homers in 8 seasons with Detroit Tigers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati, Florida and San Francisco. His career accent came during the 2010 postseason, when he won the National League Championship Series MVP award and played a major part in the San Francisco Giants ‘ World Series run after they picked him up off waivers in August. He batted .240 with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs for the San Francisco Giants last season while playing at minimum twenty-two games at every outfield position.

Ross’ contract also includes unspecified motivation bonuses primarily based on plate appearances, a resource related.

The right-handed hitting Ross and newly purchased Sweeney supply the Red Sox with a righty-lefty tandem to fill right field. Drew is a free agent later culminating a $70 million, 5-year deal. He played only 81 games last year, batting .222 with 4 homers and 22 RBIs in an injury-plagued season.

With the Red Sox, Ross may join a team in adjustment after boss Terry Francona was fire and replaced by Valentine. Boston went 7-20 in Sep last year, lost the playoffs with a record collapse.

Now, Valentine’s roster is taking form.

Last month, the Red Sox landed a new person for the back of the bullpen when they got All-Star closer Andrew Bailey and Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Josh Reddick, infield prospect Miles Head and junior league pitcher Raul Alcantara.

Reddick spent much of last season filling in for Drew and sometimes Crawford.

Bailey gives the Red Sox a trusty ninth-inning reliever to replace Jonathan Papelbon, who signed a $50 million, 4-year agreement as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies in Nov.

Final January; Ross avoided income arbitration and agreed a $6.3 million, 1 year plan with Giants.

It had been a serious increase for the former kid rodeo clown, who earned $4.45 million in 2010 and joined the San Francisco Giants on a waiver claim from Florida on Aug. 22 2010.

Ross later became one of the San Francisco Giants ‘ most trusty players -and a fan favorite – down the stretch and in an improbable title run. The club won its first victory since 1954 and 1st since moving west in 1958.

He hit 3 of his 5 postseason home runs in the NLCS towards Phillies, and the Giants won in six games towards the favored Philadelphia as Ross accepted MVP respects. He drove in 10 runs during the 2010 postseason, two in San Francisco’s five-game World Series win over the Texas Rangers.

But Ross – child of a team roper and steer wrestler – never assemble a regular groove in 2011, and the Giants failed to return to the playoffs.

It became clear the team was going in a different direction this winter. In November, CEO Brian Sabean acquired Melky Cabrera in a trade with the Kansas City Royals.
