DEREK FISHER CHOOSES OKLAHOMA TO TRY TO GET HIS SIXTH RING
Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:23 PM EDT

After winning 5 NBA titles with the L.A Lakers, Derek Fisher chose the West-leading Oklahoma City Thunder as the team where he wants to go for No. 6.

Fisher signed with the Thunder for the remainder of the season, after he was traded to Houston by the Los Angeles Lakers and subsequently purchased of his legal agreement instead of playing with the Houston Rockets. NFL scores.

He picked jersey No. 37, the same as his age, and took a little bit of a shot at the Lakers during the process.

“Particularly this season, it appeared to be a negative thing that I was 37,” Fisher said after scoring 5 points in 19 minutes in Oklahoma City’s 114-91 win over the L.A Clippers.

The Thunder lost their backup point guard, Eric Maynor, to a season-ending knee injury in January but hadn’t made any moves to address the position. All-Star Russell Westbrook had been taking on additional minutes as the starter, with rookie Reggie Jackson taking over as his backup.

Then Fisher became obtainable when the Lakers made a decision to get Ramon Sessions from Cleveland and promote Steve Blake to the starter. Fisher had won 5 titles alongside Kobe Bryant in 2 separate sessions with the Los Angeles Lakers, with stops in Utah and Golden State in between.

Fisher was expected to receive $3.4 million next season under the particulars of his agreement with the Lakers. But he gave up all of next season’s salary after being traded to Houston last week to guarantee a buyout from the Rockets and the chance to pick a possibility to join for the stretch run.

He had played 13 of his 16 NBA seasons with Los Angeles before getting dealt away at last week’s trade cut off point.

Fisher figures to take over Jackson’s backup minutes, though Coach Scott Brooks called the 2011 1st-round draft pick one of the Thunder’s “essential pieces going forward.” Fisher has averaged 8.7 points and 3.1 helps during his career, and has played in 209 playoff games in 13 visits to the postseason.

Fisher played with the Lakers when they knocked Oklahoma City out in the 1st round of the 2010 playoffs on the way to a 2nd straight championship. He revealed he always respected the team since he’s noted that the players play with power every single game. NFL spreads.

That contact was buttressed when he met with GM Sam Presti while he was going thru the process of clearing waivers and becoming a free agent.

Oklahoma City made space for Fisher by waiving forward Ryan Reid, a 2nd-round pick in 2010 who had played in only 5 games over the past season and a half.

“He’s got excellent balance, he has an excellent basketball IQ, fantastic recognition on both ends of the floor,” Presti related of Fisher.

“He comprehends the league; he’s a properly-regarded corner shooter and somebody that we want to can settle you down and make plays for you across the body of the game.”

Presti praised Jackson and reserve Royal Ivey for filling Maynor’s minutes over the last two months good enough to give Oklahoma City the league’s 3rd-best record, behind Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls.
