With 3 turnovers, a blown coverage that led to a big-play touchdown and being stunned by an onside kick, the Raiders have plenty of things to feel bad about.
The final result isn’t one of them.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 40-yard field goal after Cecil Shorts III fumbled on the opening possession of overtime and the Oakland Raiders beat 3 turnovers and a 14-point deficit to beat the Jaguars 26-23.
So although this win came against the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars (1-5), who were missing star RB Maurice Jones-Drew and QB Blaine Gabbert for much of the game, Oakland was satisfied with the result.
Palmer threw one TD pass and ran for another to force overtime for the Raiders (2-4) before they won it after Lamarr Houston forced a fumble by Shorts that Joselio Hanson recovered at the Jacksonville 21.
After one play to center the ball, Janikowski came on to kick the winning field goal to end a coarse day for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars lost Jones-Drew to a left foot injury on the opening drive and Gabbert to an injured left shoulder in the 2nd quarter and managed only 2 1st downs after halftime behind backup QB Chad Henne. Vegas odds
”We’re finding ways to not win these games instead of finding ways to win them,” Coach Mike Mularkey claimed. ”At some point you’ve got to draw a line and go, ‘Enough is enough.’ When we get to that point you may see different outcomes, but we are not there obviously.”
Jaguars lost it after Henne took a sack on 2nd down in overtime and Shorts then got stripped by Houston after a short pass over the middle to set up Janikowski’s 4th field goal of the game.
Gabbert threw a 42-yard TD pass to Shorts before leaving with the injury, Rashad Jennings scored on a 5-yard run and Josh Scobee kicked 3 field goals for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Oakland fell behind 20-6 early in the 2nd half and 23-13 early in the 4th before rallying to tie the game on Palmer’s 1-yard run with 3:34 remaining.
Palmer threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore to start the comeback and Oakland’s next 2 scoring drives were aided by Jaguars penalties.
Andre Branch was called for roughing the passer in the end zone on a 3rd-down play stopped short of the yard marker to extend a drive that finished with Janikowski’s 3rd field goal.
The Jacksonville Jaguars went 3-and-out again on the next drive, but were in position to stop Raiders on 4th-and-10 from the Jaguars 25 with under 4 minutes left.
After the Oakland Raiders used their final timeout, Palmer threw deep in the final analysis section to Darrius Heyward-Bey. Aaron Ross was requested pass interference on the play, putting Oakland at the 1 to set up Palmer’s score.
The Jacksonville broke out to a 17-3 lead and then recovered a surprise onside kick. But Henne didn’t convert a 4th-and-1 pass. The Oakland Raiders then got a 33-yard field goal by Janikowski in the last minute to make it 17-6 at the break.
