The Los Angeles Lakers returned to practice on Monday to hit the reset button on a season that suddenly started to get out of hands. “We had a bad week,” said Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. “We had a really bad week. Sunday to Sunday was kind of bad.” Odds.

Their “not so proud of” five-game losing streak is the longest skid for them since March 2007, when they lost seven consecutive games. Last season the Lakers dropped seven of their last 11 games, but headed into the postseason and went on to beat Celtics in Game 7 to conquer the championship. In 1992-93, Jackson’s Chicago Bulls, who were also going for a three-peat like this year’s Lakers, lost three of their final five games in the regular season yet still went on to take over the title against Barkley’s Phoenix Suns. So this is a “not strange” scenario for the Zen Master, Coach Phil Jackson.

Going into this week’s practice, L.A. had reserve point guard Steven Blake out with a fever. Defensive combat dog Matt Barnes was also sidelined with a wound in his right knee. On the other hand, Jackson said he wanted to give a break to his veterans Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher before their back-to-back games versus San Antonio and Sacramento to wrap up the season. Scores.

The Lakers with a 55-25 record are currently tied with Dallas for the No. 2 seed, but hold an advantage over them as they won the Pacific Division and dominated the season series 2-1. The Mavericks have one game left against possible first round opponent the New Orleans Hornets, midway through the week.

However, there was a certain level of confidence expressed by the members of the L.A. Lakers with the upcoming NBA playoffs. Gasol said he likes his team’s intensity, effort and will. He added that those things need to stay consistent for the Lakers’ chemistry to jell and play like a championship contender.

Lakers legend and team executive Magic Johnson commented in his Twitter account, warning their rivals at Oklahoma City: “OKC, Durant, and Westbrook are for real and could prove problematic for the Lakers in the playoffs if they aren’t playing their best ball,” before later tweeting that this year’s Lakers team reminds him of his 1987-88 squad that lasted three seven-game series in the postseason before winning the title. “Get ready for a tough playoff run,” Magic trash-talked.
