MARIO WILLIAMS IS THE BILLS’ NEW MULTI-MILLION CONTRACT
Tue, 20 Mar 2012 01:29 PM EDT

Free-agent pass rusher Mario Williams confirmed a 6-year contract with the Buffalo Bills that his representative, Ben Dogra, related is value up to $100 million, with $50 million guaranteed. Football scores

The $50 million guaranty is the richest for a defensive player in NFL history.

Williams was at the team’s complex and has been in dialogues with Buffalo after free agency commenced. Selected 1st overall in the 2006 draft by Houston, Williams had a franchise-best 53 sacks in 6 seasons with the Texans. Baseball scores

Listed at 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, Williams is a 2-time Pro Bowl starter, and set a single-season team record with 14 sacks in 2007. Williams was limited to playing just 5 games last season because of a torn chest muscle. He also missed 3 games in 2010 after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Following quarterback Peyton Manning, Williams has been regarded as one of the top free agents available this offseason.

The Bills regarded improving their pass rush as their top offseason priority, after managing just twenty-nine sacks last season – ten of them coming in one game.

The team conserved no cost in its bid to land Williams. General Manager Buddy Nix and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt flew on a personal jet to pick up Williams at his home in North Carolina to bring him back to Buffalo.

Williams spent last Tuesday night dining with team management and coaches at a downtown restaurant. After taking a physical and touring the Bills complex.

The Bills are coming off a 6-10 season, and have missed the playoffs for 12 straight years – the NFL’s longest active drought.

Williams joins a new-look defense that’s making the switch to a 4 linemen-3 linebackers scheme under highly rated defensive specialist Dave Wannstedt, who was promoted to coordinator in January. Williams will fit at the right defensive end position, playing with tackles Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus.

Williams is a 2-time Pro Bowl player, who is expected to be entirely healthy after undergoing surgery to fix a nagging foot injury. Dareus, the 3rd player picked in last year’s draft, is coming off a promising rookie season in which he led the Bills with 5- 0.5 sacks.

Chris Kelsay, a ten year veteran, is anticipated to start at left defensive end.

Injuries and unknowing gave heavily to the Bills defensive struggles. Buffalo finished 26th in the NFL in yards allowed and 30th in points permitted. Buffalo gave up 400-plus yards of offense eight times last year, along with a 5-game run.

The 5,938 yards permitted were a franchise worst. And the 434 points authorized were the 2nd most in team history.

Bills followers showed their support of Williams throughout the 3 days of talks.

At the Buffalo Sabres NHL game versus Colorado on last Wednesday, chants of “We need Mar-io!” were heard throughout the arena. Cars could be heard honking as they passed by Ralph Wilson Stadium. There were many followers that also showed up in the stadium parking lot searching for an opportunity to get a glimpse of Williams, or simply to be near their team’s facility to party.
