SS JASON BARTLETT was acquired from the Rays during the offseason and gives San Diego a decent on-base percentage guy, but his 2009 power surge is looking like quite the fluke. While 2B ORLANDO HUDSON is coming off a career-worst season, he still represents an upgrade by San Diego’s standards. With 1B Adrian Gonzalez gone, newly acquired BRAD HAWPE is the favorite to take over starting duties at first base, although the Padres did sign 1B JORGE CANTU to one-year, $850,000 contract, and he can serve as insurance at first base if Hawpe doesn’t pan out. Veteran AARON HARANG was a great addition to a rotation that lost JON GARLAND and is led by MAT LATOS. Latos appears to be the real deal at the top of the rotation, and the Pads will likely be more careful with him in a rebuilding year because of his extensive injury history. Latos will begin the season on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder. Baseball odds.
