The Dallas Cowboys released No. 3 quarterback Stephen McGee, one day after keeping him on the 53-man roster.
The move was made so that the team could sign tight end Colin Cochart.
McGee, a former Texas A&M QB, had been with the team since 2009.
The Dallas Cowboys have only 2 quarterbacks on the list, Tony Romo and Kyle Orton.
Cochart, 6-foot-4, 258 pounds, had been released by the Bengals.
The 25-year-old played in 10 games for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, catching 5 passes for 44 yards.
With 7-time Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten still debatable while getting over a lacerated spleen, Cochart provides some extra depth at that position. Cochart started 3 games as a rookie last season.
Witten, Miles Austin (hamstring) and Dez Bryant (knee) returned to practice on Saturday.
The Dallas Cowboys are not required to release a practice report till Sun. so it is not known how much work Witten, Austin and Bryant received. Football scores
Bryant, however, was wearing a sleeve on his right knee and all the players were in full pads.
Mike Jenkins (shoulder) was supposed to practice on Sat., but in the open media piece of practice, he wasn’t on the field. He could have gotten some work in the walkthrough session or was getting some rehabilitation work done inside the facility.
Fourth-round pick Kyle Wilber (hand) was in full pads, but he was wearing a little cast during the special team drills.
Nose tackle Jay Ratliff (ankle), wide receiver Andre Holmes (undetermined), safety Danny McCray (stinger) and safety Matt Johnson (hamstring) didn’t practice.
Before McGee was released, Coach Jason Garrett had praised the backup QB when asked for the reason why he stayed on the roster.
“We like Stephen, we like what he’s done and we evaluate the quarterback position,” Garrett declared. “What we try to do is trying and manages the roster as best we are able to. We want to keep good players. At the exact same time we understand that we should manage the different injury circumstances that we have particularly early on in the season.
“We’re rather like 31 other groups, everyone is doing these kinds of things and how we make hard decisions. I believed Stephen had a good preseason and a good coaching camp. We like having 3 QBs on the roster.”
McGee had played in three NFL games completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 420 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions.
He made only one start, the 2010 regular season finale at Philadelphia.
McGee became the 35th different QB to start a NFL game for the Cowboys. He finished 11 of 27 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown in a 14-13 victory.
Dallas also had a full 8-man practice squad in place and on the field Saturday. That group included rookie receiver Danny Coale, the injury-hampered 5th-round pick who was left off the 53-man roster at Friday’s deadline.
Also Sat., receiver Cole Beasley has changed numbers. He is now 11. Recently signed guard Ryan Cook is No. 63.
