ODOM HAS MIXED FEELINGS ON HIS RETURN TO LA
Fri, 20 Jan 2012 12:22 PM EST

Lamar Odom encountered himself in a familiar position for the Dallas Mavericks ‘ morning shootaround in basic training for their game against the L. A. Lakers on Monday night.

The Mavs kept their shootaround at the Toyota Sports Center, the Lakers ‘ exercise court wherever Odom reported to work for seven seasons. Baseball scores

“It’s a little unusual, but I’m just sort of centered at the task in hand in which is to go out and play a game and winning,” Odom, wearing his blue Dallas exercise jersey while looking all over at the purple and gold banners that hung from the walls, expounded prior to scoring 10 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in the Mavs ‘ 73-70 loss. Odom has struggled to find his pulse through the Mavericks ‘ first Thirteen games, averaging just 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 31.2 % from the area after putting up 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and shooting a career-best 53 percent in his 6th Man of the Year circuit last season.

He was dealt to Dallas together with a future second-round draft pick in exchange for an $8.9 million trade exception and a future first-round draft pick last month after asking for a trade once the first offer he was a part of involving the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Hornets was halted by NBA commissioner David Stern.

“I’ve had mixed feelings. Up and down,” announced Odom of his L.A. return. “But, things push on. There are no hard feelings.”

He did not wait for any hard affection from Lakers followers when his name is announced over the P.A. System either.

“Afterwards it’s inviting,” related Odom who added he had an “excellent time” in L.A. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.”

Odom did acquire a lengthy standing ovation when he entered Monday night’s game as a reserve midway through 1st quarter. The Lakers tribute him during the ensuing timeout with a video tribute and scoreboard information: “THANKS for the memories LAMAR.”

Though Odom appeared touched by the applauses, he didn’t show his assessment to the bunch with each magnificent gesture. He still produced some of his best minutes in his coarse start with Dallas, leading all scorers with 7 points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer periods before the period finished.

Odom and the Mavs came in a fresh different entries to the Lakers’ exercise facility than Odom did when it was his homecourt, so he did not see any of his previous squad that had just ended their shootaround when the Mavs were beginning theirs.

Of course I’ll say hi to my fellows (at the game),” Odom said. “I’ll say hi to all my friends. I had some fantastic relations here across the years.”

Even though Odom was traded just 5 weeks ago, he announced that the Mavs ‘ busy schedule full of games has assembled it look like more time has passed.

“It appears like a moment back, but you simply got to go forward man, move on,” Odom said. “It’s been a method. Time waits for no one. You put things behind you so that you can move on. So you can get better, on and off the court.”

Other than the emotive challenge that Odom will face, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle declared there had been anything else his backup forward would need to handle come play time.

“Our first priority is making sure he is going to the correct locker room,” Carlisle recounted with a smile.

Carlisle complimented Odom for how he’s played in the Mavs ‘ last 3 games entering Monday -all Dallas wins – as Odom had averaged 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot a mixed 8-for-18 from the field ( 44.4 %).

“His priority job is to race his butt off, and we all got his back,” Carlisle said. “He’s a particular guy, we like him and he’s got exclusive skills that only a few players in this league have. Right now, the thing we need from him is a high competing stage and to play his game and we’re asking that of everyone on our roster.”

Odom declared: “My physique feels good. I’m just going to play hard and hold playing harder till shots fall and plays are made.”

Mike Brown Lakers’ coach may only question what might have been. Brown chatted to Odom on the telephone when he first got the job before the lockout commenced, but in no way got an opportunity to re-ignite the union before the trade happened.

“He was part of what I was expecting to do (when I took over the team),” Brown related. “He was definitely going to be a part of what I was hoping to do with this team.”

Brown said he had even aimed beginning the 6-foot-10 Odom at small ahead and pairing him with his 2 7-footers in Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol to form a sizeable frontline, anything that previous Lakers coach Phil Jackson was reluctant to try.

“It would have been anything I’d have likely experimented with a little bit,” Brown declared. “It would’ve been fun to have a look with.”

Instead, Odom’s been Carlisle’s player to train and the Mavs ‘ coach relishes that chance.

“He’s been a man’s man,” Carlisle declared of Odom. “It was a wrestle early, he kept fighting, and now we’re in a situation where he’s rivaling at a high point and we’re going to keep it moving that way. He is a really important player on our team.”
