Ohio State has now suspended three of its players for what they state is receiving impermissible benefits at a charity event which took place earlier this year. Both the running back Jordan Hall and the defensive backs Corey Brown as well as Travis Howard have now been suspended for the Saturday’s opener which the team plays against Akron. They have been suspended for receiving around $300 or probably less in the way of benefits. Ohio State had taken it upon themselves to report the violations and have sent a notice to the NCAA for the reinstatement of the players although the school is also considering a number of other additional sanctions against these players. The athletic director of the state Gene Smith said in a recent statement “We take this matter seriously,” “Our commitment to institutional integrity is steadfast, and we must hold everyone associated with our athletics programs accountable for lapses in judgment. We believe in transparency with the NCAA, all regulatory bodies and all of Buckeye Nation.”
This latest admission has the potential to affect the previous cases of Ohio State which are playing out in front of the NCAA which will now be heard on the 12th of August. These suspensions now come as Ohio State awaits the ruling from the NCAA’s special committee on Infractions which addresses the violations which were committed by the former coach Jim Tressel as well as the former quarterback Terrelle Pryor as well as four other players. All four players Solomon Thomas, Mike Adams, Dan Herron and DeVier Posey have been suspended for around five games of the season for selling their team’s memorabilia in exchange for items, services and cash. Both Howard and Hall are listed as being starters on Ohio State’s depth chart for the Akron game while it is Brown who is a reserve. Sophomore Carlos Hyde is the running back and Rod Smithare the freshman is listed evenly on the depth chart right behind Hall. In addition Dominic Clarke the Sophomore is also listed behind Howard at the cornerback position.
