Cliff Lee explained his excellent pitching in a rather simple manner. Lee said while downplaying his success in recent games “I’m making pitches, staying out of the zone, using my breaking ball and getting lucky,”
Lee had managed to toss a good two hitter for this third time in a row as the Phillies managed to beat the great Josh Beckett as well as the Boston Red Sox in a one sided game that ended 5-0 last night. This was a series which has been hailed as being a preview to the World Series but it was the Phillies that dominated this opener. The heroes were Shane Victorino and Domonic Brown who both it a two run homer for their teams which has improved their MLB record 50-30. Vegas odds
Lee managed to contain most hits until Marco Scutaro hit a line drive in the sixth to the left center. He had run his career best without a score in a 32 inning streak and his ninth career shutout and the fourth for this year. Football odds
Lee said “It’s been a good run, no doubt about it,” “I’ve had a few in my career, but I don’t look back and compare them. I want to throw a shutout every time out there. I never want to give up a run.”
Beckett managed to give up five runs and also five hits in the sixth which made it his worst outing for this season. He entered in with an MLB best of 1.86 ERA and once it was said and done he walked out with a 2.20. He didn’t pitch owing to a flu since he tossed a one hitter on June 15 against Tampa Bay. The Manager for the Red Sox Terry Francona said “He’s one of the best pitchers in the game, and he’s riding a hot streak. That is a bad combination for any team to face,” “I haven’t seen all of his starts, but from what I have seen, he’s been quite impressive. He’s working counts, and he’s throwing strikes when he has to. He’s really got it going right now.”
The Phillies favorite player Lee got a number of standing ovations from the 180th sellout crowd which included a post season play at the Citizens Bank Park. Brown kicked off the lead for the Phillies with a 2-0 lead when he connected with two outs in the second.
