Many Pirates fans are not really used to watching baseball in July but they have responded well to it. Alex Presley the rookie player for the pirates got 14 hits and Pittsburgh has moved three over the .500 mark late in the season for the firs time in the twelve years that they have been playing with a 5-3 win over the Huston Astros yesterday. Lyle Overbay, Neil Walker, Chase D’Arnaud and Gerrett Jones each got two hits for Pittsburgh which was playing in front of their fourth consecutive home sell out crowd which is another indication of how rare this kind of thing is for the Pirates. Paul Maholm was allowed one run in the six innings he played for the Pirates who entered the play day being 1 ½ games behind St. Louis and Milwaukee in the National League Central, this is the first time they were less than two games from the division lead in the 1997 season. NFL odds

Maholm said “It’s fun, but we need to continue to play well,” “In September, it will be a lot more fun. For any of us who have been here, it’s uncharted waters, but you’re seeing a group that’s having fun and likes playing in front of big crowds. Today was cool. These were all Pirates’ fans and you had 10,000 military personnel here, too. It was really a special day.”

Jeff Keppinger got two hits and then scored two runs, Hunter Pence went 2 for 3 in his rather extended hitting streak in nine games for the Astros who now have lost their fourth consecutive, nine of 10 and then twelve of fourteen. They also have the worst record of the majors which is a distinction which belonged to the Pirates just last season. But now Pittsburgh is higher than them in 14 games. Odds

Presley said “The energy and attitude is completely different,”"We had already been eliminated when I got called up. Now, we’re a game out of first place and we feel like we’re going to win every time out. It’s fun and just totally different. We had a good crowd and I really got to see what Pittsburgh fans are like this time.”

Pittsburgh put more runs on the board this Monday than they had put previously in the 17 starts by mholm who was allowed five hits and then three walks with three strikeouts. He has an ERA of 3.08
