Mark Sanchez refused to comment on verbal dispute last week with Santonio Holmes or Holmes’ blow-up on Sunday in Miami, but he hinted on Tuesday that keeping a harmonious relationship with mercurial the wide receiver may be hard at times. Basketball scores
“Whenever I get discouraged about it, I just flip on his highlight tape, the first year he came to us after missing the first 4 games, and the amount of production he had,” New York Jets’ quarterback said on his regular spot.” It is in there. I know the capacity is there.
Sanchez said he can co-exist with Holmes, who still has four years remaining on the $ 45 million agreement that he signed last summer. NFL scores
“We’re going to make things work,” said Sanchez, adding: “I am the quarterback of the New York Jets and my responsibility is to do the best with all the players we have and get the best from everybody. It’s going to be challenging for me but I’m emotional about it. ”
The relationship of Holmes with Sanchez – in fact, his standing with the team – is in the center of attention because of his late-game benching in the Jets’ season-ending loss to the Miami Dolphins. He was removed from the game after discussing with his companions, some of whom accused him of leaving the team.
That came four days after Holmes and Sanchez exchanged words in a quarterback-receivers meeting at the Jets’ installations. Privately, some colleagues have questioned the compatibility of Sanchez and Holmes.
“Every time you are not winning and losing games, the guys are frustrated and that frustration can manifest itself in a way that guys whish they could take back,” Sanchez said. “That’s what happens when you’re a competitor. We will do it right.”
Holmes finished the season with 51 receptions and a career low in yards (654). He was upset by his role in the offense, according to a source. In fact, he was attacked once in the last game and did not catch a pass for the 1st time in his entire career.
In terms of output, Holmes and Sanchez have a terrible chemistry. In the regular season of 2011, there were 29 quarterback receiver tandems in which the quarterback targeted that specific receiver at least 100 times, and the combination Sanchez-Holmes finished with the worst completion percentage: 50.5.
Sanchez would not talk of any issue behind the scenes with Holmes, said he wanted to keep at home.
“We will handle a lot of those things,” he said. “You look at Santonio. He’s a great player. He’s been a great player for us.
We know that the capacity is there. It’s not that he’s not a good player. That’s crazy. Was it any of our best years since Dustin (Keller) and (Jeremy) Kerley who else had their best years very different (to them) and some of the players in Pro Bowl? Not all of us played our best, and that is what we will look at.”
Sanchez made a career-high 26 turnovers, including 18 interceptions, but he set career marks for touchdown (26) and yards (3,474). He struggled down the stretch as the Jets dropped their last three games to miss the playoffs, but was encouraged by his third season.
“Oh, I definitely made improvements this year,” Sanchez said. “I think the team’s history and one of the only numbers that did not improve was the interceptions. … Such number of spiked more than necessary.”
Asked if he wants the embattled Brian Schottenheimer to return as offensive coordinator, Sanchez said: “We want all our players back. We want winners.”
