RYAN VOGELSONG WILL PLAY WITH THE GIANTS AFTER SIGNING A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT
Fri, 13 Jan 2012 11:25 AM EST

Ryan Vogelsong all of a sudden has job security he isn’t accustomed to as a journeyman pitcher and right where he feels he belongs, in the Bay Area. Betting lines

Vogelsong and the San Francisco Giants concluded Wednesday to a 2 year agreement worth roughly $8.3 million after he became one of the team’s absolutely trustworthy starters and an unlikely All-Star last season.

A year back, Vogelsong had one guarantee – an invitation to massive league camp with the reigning World Series champ Giants – and was coping with the illness of his late father-in-law. Sports scores

His new agreement shows just how far he has come.

“At this point past year, to be quite truthful, baseball was far from my thoughts,” Vogelsong declared late Wednesday after landing on the East Coast following a trip to San Francisco for his physical. “To get a two year deal with an option had lots to do with not only job security of a multiyear deal but being in a place I like to play, with a team I really like to play for and in a town I love.”

The 34-year-old right-hander, who had been suitable for arbitration, made an singular comeback in 2011. He set a job high for wins while going 13-7 with a 2.71 Time in 30 games and 28 starts. The contract contains a club choice for 2014.

Vogelsong worked through three seasons in the Japanese League prior to Triple-A stints in 2010 for the Phillies and Angels. In the Bay Area with the group that originally drafted him in the 5th round in 1998, Vogelsong became a front-line starter at last. And he did so at first by filling in for injured Barry Zito.

“It’s such an excellent history when a player persists the way Ryan has in baseball,” SF Giants GM Bruce Bochy declared.

“He’s had to go thru the highs and lows and then has a breakout season and he gets rewarded. This is well-earned. He has the game. He’s got excellent stuff with ability and he does all the tiny things. We’re happy about what he did for us last year and now to tie him up, we’re excited and happy for him. It really is a superb story.”

Invited to spring training on a minor league deal, Vogelsong changed into a feel-good story and won the team’s “Willie Mac” Award. The respect is named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey and is voted on by players, coaches and training personnel for the most inspiring Giants player on the area and in the clubhouse.

Even Vogelsong did not see all this victory coming in his comeback with his initial club. He has said, “From Day One, I have been a Giant at heart.”

“The more I get inside of it, the more I really can’t accept that it happened,” Vogelsong said. “I can’t point to my game changing this seriously till after I went to winter ball. To see how far my game has come is still unbelievable.”

Vogelsong joined the Giants in mid-April, beginning 3-0 and winning 6 straight calls during one stretch lapping the All-Star break. He won his last 3 starts after a five-start unlucky run, an unusual bump on the way during his liberation year.

“He had an incredible year last year and he is the consummate professional,” asserted Bobby Evans, the team’s vice president of baseball operations. “We’re content to have him again in a Giants full dress. Last year, to see his accomplishment and to see him get to take that beyond one year, is great. I believe he was one of the largest surprises in baseball.”

Bochy related Vogelsong will be his purposed fourth starter behind Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner. Zito is the 5th starter heading into spring training next month.

Additionally on the must-do list for GM Brian Sabean is locking up Lincecum and Cain for the long run – at least that’s the wish.

“No information at this time. All dialogues are in development,” Evans recounted.
