South Carolina has managed to win its first game at the TD Ameritrade Park in the same rather dramatic fashion as it clinched the National Championship in 2010 at the Rosenblatt Stadium. Scott Wingo managed to drill down loaded bases off the right filed during the bottom half of the ninth innings which gave the Gamecocks a win of 5-4 over rather tough competitors Texas A&M yesterday night. Just last year the Gamecocks managed to in the title on Whit Merrifield during the 11 inning against UCLA. Scores
Wingo was definitely the correct man and at the right time. He walked into bat and started hitting in 12 of his previous 20 games. He said “I knew the bases were loaded with no outs,” “so you can come up big if you try to go up there and put a good swing on it.” It was a hit from Wingo that gave the team its fourth win of the season and it also signaled the first win for the Gamecocks in an opening by CWS in five tries. South Carolina managed to reel off their six straight wins in last season in Omaha after they lost their first game. The coach for the Gamecocks Ray Tanner said “It’s a very unusual feeling for me to be in Omaha and win the first game,”
South Carolina have now advanced into Bracket 2as the game winners and will now face Virginia on Tuesday night. They will also play the Aggies in an elimination match on that afternoon too. The winning hit by Wingo against the pitcher Nick Fleece has managed to cap his best career score as he manages to reach the base five times. Baseball spreads
Wingo said “I really tried to get the ball up in the air,” “When I got two strikes on me, I just tried to battle, and he threw me an inside fastball and I got it up.”
The coach for the Aggies Rob Childress said “You think it’s going to be a football score, but both pitchers settled in and pitched extremely well, and defense made some big plays,” “Ross got out of a couple of jams and so did their guy. Ninth inning, we let a leadoff double happen and just like that South Carolina came and took it from us.”
