SPIELMAN IS PROMOTED IN MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Mon, 09 Jan 2012 05:05 PM EST

The Minnesota Vikings have raised Rick Spielman to managing director, the 1st move in what’s going to be a key offseason towards stimulating a team that matched the horrible record in franchise background. Betting lines

Spielman was initiated from his prior role as vice president of player personnel, which he led since his hire in May 2006. He will now own last authority above all roster-related decisions, in addition to his prior duties leading the scouting divisions and the draft, rather than the by-committee approach to player proceedings with chief coach Leslie Frazier. “We thought hard and long through the season, and we feel this is the correct way. Knowing Rick and his group of work, we are sure he is the man to do it,” team President Mark Wilf team.

The Vikings (3-13) haven’t had a proper general manager after Mike Lynn in the 1980s. They’ve won many games since that time and been in legitimate contention for one or two Super Bowls, but snags in the group-decision technique were exposed when Frazier’s ancestor, Brad Childress, hastily cut malcontent wide receiver Randy Moss without discussion last November. Frazier also pushed last summer for the Vikings to obtain vet quarterback Donovan McNabb to give rookie Christian Contemplate enough time to learn, but the offense was static during 6 games under McNabb and Ponder took over in October.

The sharp decline from NFC runner-up two years back to successive last-place finishes with a 9-23 mixed file pushed this parting from the most popular collaborative administration style the Wilfs have used. They recognized back-to-back division titles in 2008 and 2009 clouded their order of the existing framework.

“It’s a long term answer for the organization. We’ve been successful during the past, but we felt like for the long term progress and accomplishment of the ballclub the brand that exists just about across the league for those successful groups is a model we might keep,” team Chairman Zygi Wilf said. He added: “Speaking to other owners and learning from other teams and seeing how their systems have worked, we came to the realization that this is the proper pattern this has to work.”

The power to hire and dismiss head coaches will stay with the guide owners, the Wilf bros, but a nebulous front office framework has been streamlined. For now, Mark Wilf said the organization has “full conviction” in Frazier, and all of the officers who chatted to the media Tuesday expressed confidence the Vikings can turn around swiftly. They have the 3rd pick in this year’s draft.

“Three and 13 is not sufficient for our followers of the Minnesota Vikings. It’s not acceptable for our possession. It is not satisfactory for this company. I should take my share of responsibility in that 3-13 record,” Spielman said, his voice cracking.

He was emotive earlier in the day, too, when he addressed the staff, and he appeared a bit frightened during his press conference, at one point accidentally making reference to Frazier as “Leslie Football.” But he expressed lots of trust in his capability to help rebuild the Vikings.

“The coaches will still be heavily involved thru all our satff. But it is my duty in the end to decide what’s top for this organization moving forward. I know I’ve had a wonderful conversation with Leslie. I have no concern moving forward that this is even going to become stronger in our association to put a winner on the area,” Spielman recounted.

Frazier praised the move, too. He revealed it only “enhances” his role.

“The biggest thing is you just need to know what the lines of demarcation are. For me, I know precisely where I need to go when I have to talk about certain things and get those handled, and that’s great. It’s really good for me,” Frazier said.

Spielman, the bigger brother of former NFL linebacker and current college Television analyst Chris Spielman, will start his 22nd season as an NFL executive. He was a scout for the Detroit Lions from 1990-96 and the administrator of pro staff for the Chicago Bears from 1997-99 before going to Miami with head coach Dave Wannstedt in 2000 to be the vice president of player staff for the Miami Dolphins.

Spielman served usually as a confidant to Wannstedt on draft, trade and free agency calls, but Wannstedt’s authority was reduced after the 2003 season and Spielman was sponsored to CEO over 6 other applicants. Wannstedt resigned in the midst of a sloppy 2004 season, when Spielman’s moves drew plenty of criticism, including the trade of a second-round draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback A.J. Feeley, who in no way panned out. Nick Saban usurped as Miami’s boss coach in 2005, and Spielman was squeezed out.

Spielman spent one year as a TV analyst before coming to Minnesota to supplant the fired Fran Foley. He was generally behind the scenes, addressing the media around draft time, but he revealed he’s “very excited” about the strain that will come with the new title and elevated responsibility.

“Identify where we are able to improve and come up with that action plan on to how it’s possible to get better. Not just say, ‘Yeah, we made a mistake here, what are you going to do? ‘No, it’s going to be, ‘Yeah, we made an error. Now, what are we going to do to be sure that doesn’t occur again? ‘“Spielman announced.
