The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a five-year contract to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano as their new head coach.

“We are excited to introduce Coach Schiano as the actual head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer declared in an announcement. “In our research, we had a meeting with countless impressive applicants, but Coach Schiano certainly distinguished himself. From his skills in leadership to his inspiring past history, he is, simply put, the right guy for the occupation.”

“Coach Schiano is a brilliant, meticulous teacher who understands how it’s possible to get the most out of his players,” said Buccaneers director Mark Dominik recounted in the assertion. “He created and ran a pro-style program at Rutgers, and he’s a defensive-minded coach whose groups have invariably already been characterized by toughness and a physical kind of play.”

He played linebacker at Bucknell but never in the NFL. His 1st big break in coaching came at Penn State, where Joe Paterno employed him to train defensive backs in 1991. He was at Penn State thru 1995, before being employed by the Bears.

Schiano has been courted by a number of other colleges during his time at Rutgers, specially Miami and Michigan.

The Bucs additionally talked with previous NFL head coaches Brad Childress and Marty Schottenheimer; Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski; Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray; Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer; Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and previous Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who affirmed the head coaching opening with the Dolphins.

This is not the 1st time Tampa Bay did not land its initial choice. In 1996, after the Buccaneers discharged Sam Wyche, they tried to hire Bill Parcells and Steve Spurrier previous to hiring Tony Dungy.

At present, they have hired Schiano, who has a 49-28 record at Rutgers since 2006. Schiano is alleged to have impressed the Bucs in the 2 interviews he had — one in Dallas a few weeks back, another as recently as Wednesday morning.
