The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a five-year contract to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano as their new head coach.

“We are excited to introduce Coach Schiano as the actual head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer declared in an announcement. “In our research, we had a meeting with countless impressive applicants, but Coach Schiano certainly distinguished himself. From his skills in leadership to his inspiring past history, he is, simply put, the right guy for the occupation.”

“Coach Schiano is a brilliant, meticulous teacher who understands how it’s possible to get the most out of his players,” said Buccaneers director Mark Dominik recounted in the assertion. “He created and ran a pro-style program at Rutgers, and he’s a defensive-minded coach whose groups have invariably already been characterized by toughness and a physical kind of play.”

He played linebacker at Bucknell but never in the NFL. His 1st big break in coaching came at Penn State, where Joe Paterno employed him to train defensive backs in 1991. He was at Penn State thru 1995, before being employed by the Bears.

“He’s a fantastic coach, so I’m not shocked that he was offered the opening,” McCourty said. “I think he’ll do a great job.”

Schiano is an under-the-radar coach, but Tampa Bay has been monitoring him throughout his process. Buccaneers college scout Bill Rees established contact with Schiano at the outset of Tampa Bay’s coaching research, and the 2 men stayed in contact.

The Glazer family additionally conducted a huge quantity of study, reaching out to varied NFL people. One of the people they called was Patriots chief coach Bill Belichick, who spoke exceptionally of Schiano.

Belichick on Thursday feted Schiano.

“I feel he’s an incredible coach that’s done a fine work with that program. And his players have been very NFL-ready. Players that come out of that program, when they get to the NFL, many of them make it. It may not be first-round picks or anything but if they have ample talent to really beat against in the NFL many of them end up staying in one way or another and I believe that’s a credit to the preparation and the program that he’s built there,” Belichick claimed, according to the Buccaneers in their declaration.

The Bucs additionally talked with previous NFL head coaches Brad Childress and Marty Schottenheimer; Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski; Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray; Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer; Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and previous Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who affirmed the head coaching opening with the Dolphins.
