2010 saw the best performance by the US Soccer team in a very, very long time. For the first time ever, the American public took an active role in the World Cup, with the highest ratings ever for a soccer tournament amongst viewers in the States. Things haven’t been this good for them in a long time.
It started off with a game against England, in which the SU defeated them 2-1, reminiscent of the 1960 game when they defeated England 1-0. The so called “ Miracle on Grass” was hailed as one of the most memorable moments in US Soccer, but there are some new ones to consider.
The United States boasts the most mixed demographic of any country on the world, and with more people from all over the world showing up each year, soccer is gaining in popularity. The global sport is played by billions, it’s mass appeal is due in part to the fact that the only thing you need to play is something round to kick. With all these people in the country, soccer has gained popularity in schools as a way to teach kids about fair play principles.
Far off from the status that soccer has achieved in countries like Brazil, holders of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where soccer is king, the States has been slow to warm to the game. This time however, with such a strong showing from the US National team, things have changed.
The star of the show, Dempsy, is hailed as one of the best players in the States, and the rock star of the show was goalie Tim Howard. He helped them go as far as they did in the World cup, and has signed on for another four years in preparation for the 2014 World Cup.
