“It take on an exclusive sort of guy to stay at something extended enough to make it to this level,” Wallace recounted.

“Lots of time you’re being told that you are too this, you are too that, you cannot do this, you can’t do that.”

Amid the hoopla Lin has made with his unexpected advance, Wallace is on the edge of arrangement a higher standard for undrafted players. The Detroit veteran is now tied with Avery Johnson for the most games played by an undrafted player since the 1976-77 NBA-ABA amalgamation. Wallace – who announces this is his final season – can break the record if he plays his 1,055th game against San Antonio Spurs.

“Once you get here, you need to be well placed to show everyone that you’re able of going out and playing at a serious level night in and night out,” Wallace said. “I’m just glad to have had the chance to come here and play.”

Wallace tied Johnson’s mark Sun. night. Next on the list of undrafted players are David Wesley (949) and Bo Outlaw (914).

Wallace can relate to Lin because he too had to cut out a spot for himself. Wallace was a virtual unknown before gaining his place in the NBA with his troublesome defense around the basket and superb rebounding ability. He ultimately won 4 defensive player of the year awards and helped the Pistons win the 2004 championship.

After scrutinizing retirement, the 37-year-old Wallace decided to come back for 2011-12, his 16th season in the NBA. He accepted it will positively be his last, and he’s anticipating hanging out with his folks.

“No thought to coming back,” he announced. “This is certainly my last year.”

Wallace, who played his varsity ball at Virginia Union, made his NBA debut with Washington in Nov 1996. After 3 seasons there and 1 with Orlando, he was dealt to the Pistons in a trade that sent Grant Hill to the Magic.

His profession took off in Detroit. The 6-foot-9 Wallace led the NBA in rebounds per game and blocks per game in 2001-02. That season, he won his 1st of 4 defensive player of the year awards in a 5-season span.

After leaving the Pistons following the 2005-06 season, Wallace played with Chicago and Cleveland before coming back to Detroit in 2009. This is the 3rd season of his 2nd time with the Pistons.

Wallace has started 10 games this season and can still provide, whether he’s on the court protecting the low post or helping young big man Greg Monroe adapt to the league.

“He has so much information he will share,” said Monroe, who is in his 2nd pro season. “He’s absolutely helped me out a lot, particularly on the defensive end. The more time I spend with him, the better I will get.”

Although Wallace’s playing days are numbered, he is leaving quite a tradition, and soon, he would be working at a diverse sort of court. He asserts he’s interested in going to law school at some specific stage.
