VIRGINIA BEAT CALIFORNIA 8-1
Mon, 27 Jun 2011 11:44 AM EDT

Tyler Wilson of Virginia wasn’t feeling the pressure of pitching in one of the biggest games of his career. The senior who is virtually unbeaten just allowed five hits and managed to carry a shutout around the time of the eighth inning in a win that saw Virginia beat California 8-1 in an elimination game last night. The coach for Virginia Brian O’Connor said “All year long, whenever we’ve needed a great outing, maybe after a difficult loss, he’s responded every time for his team,” “He was the right guy to give the ball to tonight. He went out there and charged the mound and gave us everything that he had.”

Virginia will now face the defending national champion South Carolina in a Bracket 2 final. The Cavaliers who managed to lose 7-1 to the Gamecocks on Tuesday would now need to win on Friday and then later again on Saturday in order to reach into the best of three championship round. This loss has ended a rather short run for California which started around a year ago with its program which was scheduled to be shut out in 2012 owing to budgetary issues. Later on the players found out that a huge $9 million fundraising effort managed to save the program. Baseball odds

Cal coach David Esquer said “It’s been a year that has really taught them, as well as myself, a whole lot about human spirit,”

Wilson managed to hold the Bears through two hits in the five innings and retired 11 players in a row from the second to the sixth. He managed to match his career high of 7 2/3 innings, strike out five and went walking for none. Wilson said “It’s the College World Series. How can you not pitch with adrenaline every time you step out there on that mound?” “The atmosphere is incomparable to anything else that you’ll ever play at this level. I was ecstatic just to be out there to give our team a chance to build some momentum going into the rest of the tournament.” Sports scores

Swab said in a statement “I saw him kind of trying to make a short-hop catch on it, and it went by, so I just started running as hard as I could,”
