Very few are giving JT a chance this week because they see his recent results and aren’t overly impressed. I see his recent results and immediately look to the underlying data. His tee-to-green game has been elite, but his putter has been letting him down. That can turn around at any point and we’ve seen bad putters play well at Augusta over the years.
JT is elite in two key areas for this course — iron play and scrambling. He has two top-eight finishes here the last three years and was in contention on Saturday in 2020 before melting down on the easy par five 13th hole. Augusta National is a course that puts a lot of mental and physical strain on every golfer. It rewards creativity and players that can shape the ball in all directions. It’s also a course that has a strong correlation with course history. Spieth fits all the criteria in terms of skill set and he is a past champion.
